Commonly, celebrations of Festivities are an event amongst the Mauritian Nation.
“La Regate” which is celebrated yearly at the end of September is carried out on the South-East Coast of Mauritius in the village of Mahebourg where hundreds of Fishermen lead a unique race of hundreds of kilometers on the sea. This festival is very colorful and exciting.
“La peche a la Senne” is a festival where fishermen join together to mark the beginning of artisanal fishing during the period of August in Mauritius and Rodrigues Island. A unique occasion to live this marvelous moment with local people and also to have local fresh fish.
“Festival Créole” is an event where the Ministry of Tourism (The MTPA) in partnership with the Ministry of Arts & Culture does invite celebrities from abroad to perform during a whole night festival of singing and dancing and sometimes it lasts for three consecutive days.
“Eid-Ul-Fitr” is a Public Holiday where the Muslim community which consists of about 15% of the Mauritian nation do celebrate after one month of fasting of ‘Ramadaan’. During this festival, the Muslim brothers shares cakes and “Briyani” meals.
“Divali Night” is a very famous national festival for the Hindu community which is celebrated on the 13th of November where Hindu houses are illuminated with lightings. Also they celebrate the “Maha Shivaratree” festival on the 20th February where Hindu people walk long distances from their place of residence to go to a dead volcano crater, known as Grand-Bassin (Ganga Talao) where you can take picture of a huge and unique statue of Shiva.
Chinese Spring Festival is celebrated every 23th January where the Chinese people meet together in their Pagodas for prayers and distribute “Gateaux LaCire”
Abolition of Slavery is a public holiday celebrated every 1st of February and this festival emphasize the tragedy of the slavery community during the colonial times and now the Mauritian nation is proud to have the Mountain “Le Morne Brabant” as a world-class Patrimoine Heritage for the UNESCO. Also with this event, let us inform about the world-class Patrimoine of Aapravasi Ghat situated in Port-Louis where the first Hindu contingent landed over there.
On the 7th of February, the Tamil community performed a festival called the “Taipoosam cavadee” which is very colorful and fascinating.
Mauritius obtained its Independence on the 12th of March 1968 and the whole nation celebrate the festival yearly on that day.
The “Oogadi Telegu New year” in celebrated on the 23rd of March.
The government allows a public holiday on the 1st of May which is called the “Labour Day”
Christmas is celebrated on the 25th of December where Christians celebrate the arrival of Jesus.
